HISTORY

When the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad planned a railroad from Fort Worth to Hillsboro, a depot was established on the townsite in 1881. Grenville M. Dodge, represented the railroad, bought the land from Rev. Henry C. Renfro. As part of the agreement, Renfro was allowed to name the depot. He named it Burleson, in honor of his teacher and later president of Baylor University, Dr. Rufus C. Burleson.

The town was officially incorporated in 1912, and became a city in 1938.

Within its first 50 years, Burleson was a stable community organized around agriculture and raised livestock. By 1960, population grew and Burleson became a suburb of Fort Worth. The community relied less on agriculture and more on business and industry. In 1980, the city had fourteen manufacturers constructing glass, mobile homes, camper tops and metal storage sheds. Currently, Burleson’s population is over 39,900 people.
