The 66-acre Coppell Nature Park and The Biodiversity Education Center is a place where residents and visitors can enjoy nature. HISTORY of Coppell
In the 1840s, German and French immigrants settled in the Coppell area, which was originally named “Gibbs Station” after Barnett Gibbs, a former Texas Senator and Lieutenant Governor. In 1892, the town was renamed to Coppell after George Coppell, a wealthy financier from England who came to the U.S. in the 1880s. It was reported that George Coppell was heavily involved with the final construction of the local railroad line.
Coppell was incorporated in 1955 and the city was transformed from a small farming village to a large, upper-middle class suburban community in the 1980s and 1990s. Coppell also has a growing commercial base of warehouses and transportation centers on the south and west sides of the city that is closest in proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
Today, a handful of historic landmark buildings, such as the old-time barbershop in Old Town Coppell and the Bethel Cemetery, still reside in the city. Coppell’s population has grown over 40,000.
