HISTORY of Dallas

Dallas area was inhabited by the Caddo people before the Spanish colonists claimed the territory of Texas in the 18th century as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1821, the area was then considered part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas when Mexico declared independence from Spain. In 1836, the Republic of Texas broke off from Mexico and remained an independent country for almost 10 years.

John Neely Bryan established a permanent settlement near what is now the Trinity River and called that settlement Dallas in 1841. The origin of the name is uncertain because there were a number of people named Dallas who could have been an inspiration for the city’s name. In 1856, Dallas was formally incorporated as a city. By 1860, the population of Dallas reached 678.

In 1873, Dallas became a hub when major railroad lines were constructed connecting to Houston and other major railroad cities. By late 19th and early 20th century, the city was booming and became a business and trading center. Dallas was the world center of leather manufacture and harness making.

In 1909, Dallas’ prominence was marked when the Praetorian Building of 14 stories was built. It was the first skyscraper west of the Mississippi. Dallas’ prominence was reinforced with the interstate highway system in the 1950s and 1960s. Due largely to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas developed a strong financial and industrial sector along with a major inland port. Dallas currently has a population well over 1.2 million.
