HISTORY
In the early 1840s, settlers came to the area near present-day Plano. After several rejections of names for the town, the locals suggested the name Plano (from the Spanish word for “flat”) referencing the local terrain. The Houston and Central Texas Railway completed in 1872 and Plano was officially incorporated in 1873.
Plano population initially grew slowly, reaching 1,304 in 1900. By 1970, it increased to over 17,000 when a series of public works projects and a change in taxes removed the farming community from the town helped increase the overall population. During the 1980s, the population exploded to 72,000 when many large corporations moved their headquarters to Plano, including J. C. Penney and Frito-Lay.
Plano has little undeveloped land remaining within the city limits and its current population is over 250,000 people.
