The first immigrants of the area of Allen arrived in the early 1840s. The town was established by the Houston and Central Texas Railroad (H&TC) and was named in 1872 for Ebenezer Allen, a state politician and railroad promoter. Crops were transported on the H&TC and sold across the country before they rotted, which caused a shift from previous cattle-based agriculture.
