HISTORY

The Cedar Hill area served as a hiding ground for those evading the law because of its densely covered area. It was also a resource for Oklahoma folks who sought cedar posts for fencing. In 1844, settlers were living in the region. In 1852, the town opened its first post office and its first official school.

The town became a center of trade and shipping after the rebuild from an 1846 tornado that destroyed majority of the area. The railroad brought business through Cedar Hill in the 1880s. In the 1920s and 30s, the town concentrated on cotton but shifted to dairy and cattle by 1940. There were 848 residents in 1960 and currently, the city has over 48,000 people.

LOCATION

Cedar Hill offers breathtaking views because it is 841 feet above sea level, the highest point in Dallas County and is the highest point between Dallas and Galveston. It is 20 minutes southwest of downtown Dallas and 40 minutes from downtown Fort Worth. Major thoroughfares include the IH-20, IH-35E, IH-45, US 67 and FM 1382.
