How do I know if there are grubs in my lawn?

Grubs are the larvae of beetles that live in the soil and feed on grass roots. If too many grubs invade your lawn, these pests can kill off huge patches of grass, reducing your well-tended lawn into an unsightly mess. Here are some signs that you have a grub infestation in your lawn in Midlothian:

  • Irregular brown or dead patches of grass that do not improve with watering. This can indicate extensive root damage caused by feeding grubs.
  • Your lawn may feel strangely spongy when walked on because the grubs have eaten the grass roots, causing the turf to detach easily from the soil.
  • Wild animals such as birds, raccoons, skunks, and moles may dig holes in your lawn in search of tasty grubs to eat, inflicting further lawn damage in the process.
  • Check if you can easily pull up your grass using a shovel or spade. If it lifts up like a carpet with little resistance, this is a likely sign of a grub infestation. You may even see grubs wriggling around in the soil.

Keep in mind that almost every lawn in Midlothian has at least some grubs living in it. Grubs only become a problem when there is such a high density of them that they can eat through grass roots faster than they can regrow. To see if you have a true grub infestation, dig several 1 sq. ft. holes in different areas of your lawn, about 3 inches deep each. Count the number of grubs found in each hole; more than five grubs per hole is too many and you’ll likely need to treat your lawn.
