Garland Community Information

Garland is a culturally diverse city adjacent to northern and eastern Dallas. Garland has a rich history, urban appeal, natural resources, and pure Texas charisma. Garland’s branding slogan is Texas Made Here in which the city is the hub for many manufacturers.

Garland was also ranked #67 on CNN and Money Magazine’s 2008 list of “Top 100 Places to Live”.

Around 1850, immigrants arrived in the Peters Colony area but the community wasn’t created until 1874. Two communities sprung up, Embree and Duck Creek. The two towns became rivals as the area began to grow around the Santa Fe Railroad depot. In 1887, a dispute regarding which town should have the local post office was settled when a bill was submitted to Congress that forced railroads from the two towns to deliver to the new post office. The new location was named Garland after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. The three towns combined to form the city of Garland, which incorporated in 1891.

An electrical generator plant was built in 1920 and out of this plant, the Garland Power and Light was formed that still powers the city today. In the late 1930s, many businesses moved into the area. Today, Garland is a major manufacturing hub with more than 375 manufacturers including Raytheon, Kraft Foods, Sherwin Williams, and General Dynamics.

In 1904, the town had 819 people and by 1950, the population grew to over 10,000 people. Following World War II, Garland experienced the suburban population boom and each decade after, the population grew to 138,850 by 1980. Currently, there are over 227,000 people living in Garland.

Garland is 15 miles northeast of downtown Dallas and is bordered by Interstate 635, Interstate 30 and US 190 with Texas State Highway 78 running through the center of the city. It is also 20 miles from Dallas Love Field Airport and 30 miles for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
