HISTORY

Around 1850, immigrants arrived in the Peters Colony area but the community wasn’t created until 1874. Two communities sprung up, Embree and Duck Creek. The two towns became rivals as the area began to grow around the Santa Fe Railroad depot. The new location was named Garland after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. The three towns combined to form the city of Garland, which incorporated in 1891.

An electrical generator plant was built in 1920 and out of this plant, the Garland Power and Light was formed that still powers the city today. In the late 1930s, many businesses moved into the area. Today, Garland is a major manufacturing hub with more than 375 manufacturers including Raytheon, Kraft Foods, Sherwin Williams, and General Dynamics.
