HISTORY of Fort Worth
In 1840, settlement in the Fort Worth area was established. In 1843, General Edward H. Tarrant and George W. Terrell negotiated a treaty with the chiefs of different tribes which states that Native Americans were to remain to the west of a line traced passing through the future site of Fort Worth. The line marked “Where the West Begins”, gave Fort Worth its famous slogan.
In 1873, Fort Worth was incorporated with a population of 500. In 1876, the Texas & Pacific Railway arrived and Fort Worth became the heart of the Texas’ ranching industry. A decade later, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was held and is home to the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo.
Fort Worth later brought new wealth into the city with oil and aviation. Then, it capitalized its strengths as a transportation, business and military center during the post-war years.
A major revitalization of Fort Worth downtown started in the mid-1980s along with building Sundance Square, which grew to a 35-block commercial, residential, entertainment, and retail district.
With more than 150 years of history, Fort Worth has endured economic changes and retained its Western heritage while continuing to prosper. Fort Worth currently has a population close to 800,000 people.
