HISTORY
In 1889, the area of Irving was called Gorbit and the name changed to Kit in 1894. In 1903, J.O. “Otto” Schulze and Otis Brown founded Irving. The Irving co-founders decided to name the city after Netta Barcus Brown’s favorite author, Washington Irving. The city was incorporated in 1914 with Otis Brown as the first mayor. Irving was the center for cotton growing, dairy and truck farming, and poultry production in this period.
The University of Dallas opened in 1956 and several manufacturing plants operated in Irving along with transportation, retail and financial businesses. The Texas Stadium was completed in 1971, which was the home field of the Dallas Cowboys.
In 1973, Las Colinas opened as a privately funded, master-planned community of 7,000 acres which has grown to include over 1,000 corporations, as well as homes, schools, recreation facilities, and shopping area. In 1974, the country’s largest airport was opened, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport. It is now known as Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
By early 1960s, Irving’s population grew to about 45,000. Irving’s population is well over 225,000 as of the 2012 Census.
